Which next gen console should you buy?

There is no single best next-gen console, only the one that fits how you play. All three are a step up from the last generation, but they are aiming at different players, so it is worth a quick look at what each one does well before you pick.

PlayStation 5

The PS5 is the all-rounder, with fast load times, sharp 4K visuals and a strong line-up of exclusives. Its DualSense controller adds detailed vibration and resistance in the triggers, which a lot of games now build around. It comes in a Disc Edition and a cheaper Digital Edition, so you can choose whether you want to use physical games. If you want a powerful console with a big library of its own games, start with the refurbished PS5.

Xbox Series X

The Series X is the most powerful of the three and made for 4K TVs, with quick loading and a huge back catalogue through backward compatibility, so it plays a lot of older Xbox games as well as the newest ones. It pairs well with Xbox Game Pass if you like having a rotating library to dip into. If outright power and a big catalogue matter most, look at the refurbished Xbox Series X.

Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 is the versatile one. It is the only next-gen console you can play on the TV, on a table or in your hands, and it plays the existing Switch library alongside its own newer titles. It is not chasing the other two on raw power, it wins on flexibility and Nintendo’s exclusives. If you want a console that goes wherever you do, see the refurbished Nintendo Switch 2.

Each console is fully tested, cleaned and graded before it goes on sale. You will see the grade on every listing, from A+ Pristine down through A Excellent, B Good and C Grade, so you can decide how much cosmetic wear you are happy with and pay accordingly. A lower grade performs exactly like a top one, it just carries a few more marks from its previous life. Buying refurbished rather than new saves you money across all three and keeps a good console in use rather than sitting in a drawer.

FAQs

What counts as a next gen console?

The current generation is the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X and Series S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. They replaced the PS4, Xbox One and original Switch, with faster hardware and newer games. The older consoles still play huge libraries and are the better value choice if you are not set on the latest generation.

Which next gen console is the most powerful?

The Xbox Series X is the most powerful on paper, closely followed by the PS5. In practice the two are very close, and the games you want to play matter more than the small gap between them. The Nintendo Switch 2 is less powerful but wins on flexibility.

PS5 or Xbox Series X, which should I choose?

They are close on power and price, so it usually comes down to the games and the extras. Choose the PS5 for its exclusives and the DualSense controller. Choose the Xbox Series X for raw power, a large backward-compatible catalogue and Game Pass. If you already own games on one platform, staying with it is often the easiest call.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 a next gen console?

Yes. The Switch 2 is the current generation of Nintendo console. It is not built to match the PS5 or Series X on raw power, but it is the only one of the three that plays on the TV and as a handheld, which is its main appeal.

Is it worth buying a refurbished next gen console?

Yes. You get the same console and the same performance for less than new, fully tested and graded before sale, so you avoid the risks of buying privately. It is also the greener choice, since it keeps a working console in circulation.

What condition will a refurbished console be in?

Each console is graded so there are no surprises. A+ Pristine looks close to new, A Excellent has very light wear, B Good shows some visible marks, and C Grade carries more noticeable signs of use. Whichever grade you choose, the console has been fully tested and works the same. The grade only reflects how it looks.
