iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro – Is the Pro Worth It

The iPhone 17 Pro sits above the standard iPhone 17, costs more, and carries the Pro name. The question worth asking this year is whether the extra money actually gets you enough to matter, because the standard 17 has quietly picked up a lot of the features that used to be reserved for the Pro.

Below we lay out exactly what is the same, what is different, and who each phone is really for, with verified specs and live refurbished prices from our own stock. Both phones launched in September 2025, so this is about getting the right one for you rather than chasing a new release.

The short answer

For most people, the standard iPhone 17 is enough. It shares the same screen, the same front camera and the same core design as the Pro. The iPhone 17 Pro is worth the step up if you want the telephoto zoom lens, the extra sustained power for gaming and video, or the option of more storage. If neither of those things speaks to you, the money is better kept in your pocket.

What the two phones share

This is the part that changes the whole decision this year. The standard iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro use the same 6.3in Super Retina XDR OLED display, with the same 120Hz ProMotion, the same Always-On screen and the same peak brightness. In previous years the smoother, brighter screen was a Pro perk. Now both phones have it.

They also share the same 18MP Center Stage front camera, the same 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide rear cameras, and the same aluminium construction. The Pro used to be set apart by a titanium frame, but this year both phones are aluminium. So in the hand, and for everyday use, the two are far more alike than the price gap suggests.

The telephoto lens is the biggest reason to go Pro

The clearest difference is the camera on the back. The standard 17 has two rear lenses, a main and an ultra-wide. The 17 Pro adds a third, a 48MP telephoto with 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom, backed by a much larger sensor. That gives you the longest zoom range Apple has put in an iPhone.

If you photograph anything at a distance, whether that is sport, wildlife, concerts or just your kids across a park, the telephoto lens is a genuine reason to choose the Pro. If most of your photos are people, food, scenery and everyday moments at normal range, the standard 17 will serve you just as well.

Performance and the A19 Pro chip

Both phones are fast. The iPhone 17 runs the A19 and the 17 Pro runs the A19 Pro, which adds an extra graphics core and, importantly, vapor chamber cooling. That cooling lets the Pro hold its top speed for longer under heavy load, so the real benefit shows up in demanding games and long stretches of video editing or recording, not in everyday browsing and messaging.

For the vast majority of people, the standard A19 is more power than they will ever use. If you are a serious mobile gamer or you shoot and edit a lot of high-resolution video on your phone, the A19 Pro is the one that will keep its composure.

Battery, storage and weight

Battery life is close. Both phones comfortably clear 30 hours of video playback, with the Pro holding a small edge of a few hours thanks to its slightly larger body. That extra size also makes the Pro heavier, at 206g against 177g for the standard 17, and a touch thicker. If you want the lighter, more pocketable phone, the 17 has the edge.

Storage is the other split. The standard 17 comes in 256GB or 512GB, while the Pro adds a 1TB option for anyone shooting a lot of video or carrying large libraries. If you are unsure how much you actually need, our guide to how much phone storage you really need is a good place to start.

Price and where refurbished comes in

New, the Pro carries a clear premium over the standard 17. Refurbished, you get the same step up in capability for a good deal less. A refurbished iPhone 17 starts from around £630, while a refurbished iPhone 17 Pro starts from around £900. Both come unlocked and SIM-free, both include a 12-month warranty and free UK delivery, and both pass the same 70+ point check and grading process.

Because cosmetic grade affects price and not function, choosing a Grade B phone is an easy way to bring either model down further, especially if you use a case. You can also spread the cost with Klarna or through our phone leasing options.

What about the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

If the Pro appeals but you want the biggest screen and the longest battery life Apple offers, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the larger version of the same phone, with an even bigger battery and a 2TB storage option at the very top. It is the one to look at if screen size and endurance matter more to you than pocketability.

So which one should you buy?

Buy the standard iPhone 17 if you want a phone that shares the Pro’s screen, front camera and design for noticeably less, and you do not need a zoom lens or the extra sustained power. For most people, this is the sensible choice and the better value.

Buy the iPhone 17 Pro if you want the telephoto lens for distant shots, you push your phone hard with gaming or video, or you want the 1TB storage option. Those are real, specific reasons, and if one of them fits you, the Pro earns its place.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 17 Pro worth it over the standard 17?
It is if you want the telephoto zoom lens, the extra sustained performance of the A19 Pro chip, or the 1TB storage option. If you do not need those, the standard 17 shares the same screen, front camera and design for less, and is the better value for most people.

What is the main difference between the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro?
The telephoto camera. The 17 Pro adds a third 48MP rear lens with up to 8x optical-quality zoom, which the standard 17 does not have. The Pro also has a more powerful A19 Pro chip with vapor chamber cooling.

Do the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro have the same screen?
Yes. Both use the same 6.3in OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion and an Always-On screen, so you are not paying more for a better display this year.
