GTA 6 lands on 19 November 2026, and after the gameplay reveal last week got everybody hyped, the question we are seeing the most is, what do I actually need to play it?
Fair warning before you read on. If you were hoping your older console would cope, it might not!
Your PS4 will not run it. Neither will your Xbox One
Rockstar has confirmed PS5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. That is the list. The PS4 and Xbox One are not on it, and they are not getting a cut-down version either.
We are being blunt about this because we sell a lot of refurbished PS4s and Xbox Ones and they are still brilliant value. Just not for this. Every year around a big launch we get people buying a cheap last-gen console for a game it cannot run, and the conversation afterwards is nobody’s favourite.
If you already own a PS4 or an Xbox One, hang onto it. The libraries on both are enormous and the games are cheap now. You will just need something newer sitting next to it come November.
No PC version at launch, before anyone asks. Rockstar has not announced one, given a date or put out system requirements. GTA 5 eventually turned up on PC about eighteen months after console, so history says it will happen. History is not a promise. Switch 2 has not been confirmed either.

The storage question, which matters more than usual here
Rockstar games are big. GTA 5 crept past 100GB with updates. Red Dead 2 was around 150GB. Nobody has published a figure for GTA 6 yet and we would be surprised if it came in small.
Which brings us to the Series S and its 512GB, of which you get noticeably less once the system has taken its share. It will run the game. You will also spend a chunk of November deciding which of your other games gets deleted to make room.
If you only ever have one or two games installed, that is a non-issue and the Series S is a lot of console for the money. If you like keeping six things on the go, the extra room on a Series X or a Slim is the difference between enjoying yourself and managing a hard drive. Expandable storage exists for both, though it is not cheap, and factoring that in narrows the price gap a fair bit.
PlayStation or Xbox?
Nobody has announced exclusive content on either side, so this is the same question it always is. Where are your friends? That is genuinely the answer for most people, because GTA is more fun with people you know.
One thing worth flagging from the reveal. Rockstar has said 30 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and a performance mode has been discussed without being promised. If a 60fps mode does turn up later, it is going to favour the more capable hardware. That is a soft argument for a Series X or a Pro over the entry-level options, not a reason to blow your budget.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it for this?
Only if you have a 4K telly. That is the whole test.
On a good 4K set the Pro genuinely looks better, holds frame rates steadier in the busy bits and gives you 2TB to play with, which given the file sizes above is not nothing. On a 1080p screen you would be paying for pixels your television cannot display. A standard refurbished PS5 runs the identical game.
Do check the disc drive situation if you buy physical. The Pro does not come with one and the part is sold separately, which quietly closes the gap between a Pro and a Disc Edition.
What grades actually mean on a console
This is the bit we end up explaining most, because people apply phone logic to it and overpay.
On a phone, the grade is everything. You hold it, you stare at it, a scratch on the screen is a scratch you see a hundred times a day. A console goes under the telly, shows one face, and half the time lives behind a cabinet door. That scuff on the side panel is something you clock once while unboxing and then never think about again.
What we actually care about when one comes in is the drive, the ports and the fan. Those get tested on every console regardless of what grade it ends up being. A C Average PS5 has been through the same checks as an A+ Pristine one. It just looks like it has had a life.

Honest advice? On a console, take the B. Put the difference toward the game. We would say the opposite about a phone or a watch, but a console is the one product where the grade costs you the least in real life.

So, what would we buy?
Tight budget, 1080p telly, download everything: Xbox Series S. Go in knowing you will be juggling storage.
Most people, most living rooms: a PS5 Slim or an Xbox Series X. Disc version if you buy games secondhand, which over a year usually pays for itself.
Proper 4K setup and you care how it looks: PS5 Pro.
Last thing. If you are buying for November, buy before November. Console stock gets thin in the weeks before a release this size and prices have never once moved in the buyer’s favour. We would rather you got a good one at a good price than scrambled in the second week of the month.
