What does the “Important Battery Message” on my iPhone mean?
“Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery” means the battery was fitted by somebody other than Apple, which is exactly what happens when we put a new battery in during refurbishment. It is a notice, not a fault: nothing about how your iPhone works, charges or lasts is affected by it.
Which iPhones show the non-genuine battery message?
iPhone XR, XS and XS Max onwards, and only once the battery has been replaced by anyone other than Apple. iOS looks for Apple’s own pairing between the battery and the phone, and a replacement cell does not carry it, however good the cell is.
How long does the message show for?
- On the lock screen, for the first 4 days.
- In Settings → Battery, for 15 days after that.
- After that it stays only in Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History, where the battery is listed as an unknown part.
So on a phone you have just had, the message goes from the lock screen within the week and out of the battery settings inside three.
Is the message a safety warning?
- It is not a warning about safety, and not a sign of damage.
- Charging speed, battery life and every other function are unaffected.
- iOS may not show a maximum capacity figure for the battery (“health information not available for this battery”). That is the same check, not a separate fault.
