iPad — Troubleshooting

Most iPad issues are quick to resolve. Work through these first.

Won’t turn on or charge

  • Try a different cable and charger, and a different power socket.
  • Charge for at least 30 minutes, then try again.
  • Force restart: On Face ID iPads: press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Top button. On Home-button iPads: hold the Top and Home buttons together.

No signal or SIM not detected

  • Reseat the SIM and check your network has coverage.
  • Restart the device and check for carrier settings updates.

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth problems

  • Toggle the connection off and on.
  • Forget the network/device and reconnect.
  • Reset network settings if needed.

Slow, freezing or crashing

  • Install the latest updates.
  • Free up storage space.
  • Restart; as a last resort, back up and reset.

Common iPad issues

Apple Pencil won’t pair or charge

Check your Pencil generation matches your iPad. For a 2nd-gen Pencil, attach it magnetically to the side to pair/charge; for 1st-gen, plug it into the Lightning port. Re-pair from Settings → Apple Pencil.

Touchscreen unresponsive

Remove any screen protector, clean/dry the screen, and force restart.

Won’t charge or charges slowly

iPads need a higher-power adapter than phones — use the included/USB-C adapter and a good cable; cleaning the port helps.

Split View / Stage Manager acting up

Update to the latest iPadOS in Settings → General → Software Update, then restart.

Still not right? Your iPad may be covered by its 12-month warrantycontact us.
