Five classic iPhone apps that had us all glued to our phones!

Hundreds of thousands of apps have been added to the Apple Store over the years, but a standout few have gripped millions of us, keeping us glued to our iPhones for hours. These are 5 of our most beloved classic apps, how many of these can you remember?

Temple Run

This game has truly stood the test of time as it continues to be loved by many players. Temple Run was first released back in 2011, the simple game uses 3D graphics and swipe motions to allow users to embark on their own adventure through the jungle. If you’ve never played this game before we highly recommend you give it a try. The longer you play without losing, the higher score you’ll get, trust us when we say it becomes very addictive.

Flappy Bird

If you had an iPhone back in 2013/early 2014 it’s highly likely you were sucked into the Flappy Bird craze. The game spiked in popularity and users were racking up hundreds of in-game hours trying to set high scores. The original creator of the game removed the app from the App store in February 2014, in what was one of the biggest PR stunts Apps have ever seen. iPhone owners who still had the game installed on their device were auctioning off their tech for thousands of pounds so players who had missed out could still enjoy the game. The owner of the game said he removed it due to its highly addictive nature. Since the original release, copies and similar games have come out but none have captivated us in quite the same way.

iBeer

This is one of the earliest released games on the App store that users widely loved! Launched in 2008 the game does exactly what you would expect – gives you a (digital) beer which you can pretend to drink by tilting your phone in what is still arguably one of the funniest uses of an iPhone to this day. But we’re not joking when we say people LOVE this app, at one point creators of the app say they were making about £2000 a day from app purchases.

Pokemon Go

A more recent, but still classic game is of course Pokemon Go! Released back in the summer of 2016 this is a game that really hooked the entire nation with everyone from all ages getting involved and trying to catch them all. The game peaked at around 133 million users in 2018. Although the app has since been on a steady decline it still holds a special place in our list. For the first time, many people were motivated to go outside and use their phones as part of the user experience, the app was also revolutionary in the way it used AR and GPS to create a really engaging experience.

Doodle Jump

The final game to make our top 5 list is Doodle Jump. This game was released on the App store in 2009 and didn’t make it across to the Play store until years later. Not only did this leave Android users desperate to play the game but iPhone users built their own community of friends who also played the game. You could see each other’s high scores and try to beat them with your own which added a fun level of competitiveness to the game.

What classic apps would have made your top 5 list?
