What is 5G and do I really need it on my next phone?

Wap, 2G, 3G, 4G & 5G. As time has moved on, we’ve become used to our phone providers boasting the fastest speeds with the ultimate reliability. What does this really mean for us, the user though? Which is best? Is there really a difference? Should I pay more for a phone with 5G? We’ve delved into some of the most frequently asked questions below, to try and give you a definitive answer as to whether we should really care about 5G, and how much easier it’s going to make our lives.

So, what is the difference between 4G and 5G?

Unlike when 3G was replaced by 4G, 5G was introduced not as a replacement but as an added extra layer to the network to cater for the busiest parts of the UK. 5G boasts being twice as fast as 4G, whilst eliminating lagging and offers coverage that is more reliable, great for downloading or streaming films and music, and also when browsing your favourite websites for work or pleasure. Ultimately, Who would not want a more reliable and quicker mobile network?

Why are 5G phones more expensive and are they worth it?

Like most innovative advances in technology, to have the latest gadgets partnered with the promise of seamless networking speeds comes with a price. Just like when Apple released the Face ID feature or Samsung with the new flip phone. Whilst the technology is in its first couple of years prices will be at a premium, however, historically they do fall into line eventually. It is worth it for the daily commute catching up on your latest series on public transport, or if buffering is your kryptonite when searching the web.

If I have a 5G phone, will I get 5G everywhere?

Since the original rollout of 5G in 2019, the target was originally for major cities, upon its success 5G has since been rolled out to the large majority of towns as well. Most network providers, such as EE and Vodafone to name a few, have handy tools on their website which allow you to search for 5G coverage in your area. This is certainly worth checking, as each network provider will have different geographical locations with 5G coverage.

Will 5G be faster than my Wifi?

It was never in doubt that wifi would enter the ring and stand face to face in a battle with 5G. When 5G was originally rolled out in the UK, it claimed to be four times quicker than the average home wifi. The truth is, you will probably need or use both. As technology actively improves and develops all the time, it is likely both will exchange places as your number one downloading/streaming source of connectivity.

Which phones have 5G capabilities?

Split into the two market-leading brands, Apple released its iPhone 12 range which have 5G capability. These include the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Samsung Released the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G, Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra 5G, and the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. Retrospectively they also offered the S20 range with 5G
