iPhone Storage vs iCloud – which is better?

When choosing your new or used iPhone there are plenty of options regarding internal storage, with the latest models, including the iPhone 12, having up to 256GB you might be wondering why having iCloud storage is still a good option.

Internal storage is great for storing things on your device including music, films, or items on your camera roll – anything stored on your device is accessible any time, anywhere! Even if you have no signal you can still access your precious photos if they are stored internally on your device.

There are however, several benefits to using iCloud storage as an alternative or in addition to internal storage.

Firstly, when switching from an existing device to a new one you can easily transfer your files across thanks to backing up your device on the iCloud, this includes images, videos and even contacts – making it easy to set up your new device and get things running quickly.

Cloud storage in general provides benefits to users that aim to create a better experience when it comes to using technology. Most commonly people share images and videos to ensure they are kept safe for years to come, iCloud even allows you to automatically sync your files and back them up when connected to Wifi or on mobile data – particularly great for when you take photos on the go. You can ensure that holiday memories, moments with friends and time with family is remembered even if something was to accidentally happen to your device.

Similarly, iCloud users can share files with other users and create collaborative folders, this is great for family members to be able to view and share photos of one another or for friends to upload images taken of one another on a group trip.

We know that cloud technology can sometimes get a bad reputation as breaches of privacy or data is all that gets shared in the news. The truth is these scenarios are extremely unlikely to affect general use and your photos, videos and files are very much safe. They are password protected and only accessible by yourself or users who you have shared them with.

So which is truly better? Should you buy an iPhone with large internal storage and forget about iCloud or should you jump ship and have everything on the cloud from this point forward? Well like most things, the answer isn’t that straightforward. There are plenty of benefits to doing each of these things but in reality most Apple users will take a hybrid approach with files being stored on their devices and the most important being backed up on iCloud.
